Released in 1978 , this first album installment in the series features arrangements and performances of themes from various sci-fi movies and TV shows, including Star Trek, Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and many others. The album was produced by Neil Norman, who is a musician and record producer known for his interest in science fiction and space-themed music. He has released several albums of similar material over the years, including the sequel to this album, Greatest Science Fiction Hits II, in 1981 – all the way to volume five more recently. These albums have remained popular among sci-fi and music fans for many years, even though the void of film and tv music they filled has been mitigated, and is considered a classic of its genre. Its success has led to the creation of many similar compilations over the years, as well as numerous concerts and performances dedicated to sci-fi music. This recording features synthesizers and guitars as well as the theremin, trumpet, trombone, reeds, french horns and various percussion. A true orchestra!
