From the earliest period of First Contact’s development, Rick Berman and Jonathan Frakes sought to ensure that the film would contain one vital element: the music of Jerry Goldsmith. Goldsmith had scored the first Star Trek film (Star Trek: The Motion Picture) in 1979, and Gene Roddenberry, creator of the Star Trek franchise, had insisted on employing Goldsmith’s dynamic TMP march theme as the title music for The Next Generation. That choice made Goldsmith’s march the de facto theme for the franchise, as important as Alexander Courage’s original theme music for the 1966 TV series. Despite his music’s popular association with the Next Generation series, Goldsmith had not worked directly with the Next Generation “regime” until late 1994, when Rick Berman hired Goldsmith to compose the title music for Star Trek: Voyager—winning the composer an Emmy award in the process. For Berman, this initial collaboration cemented his desire to bring Jerry Goldsmith back to the Star Trek feature films. “At that point I kind of re-fell in love with him because I’d been very aware of his music,” Berman said in an interview for the original CD release of the score. “Right after we wrote the script for Star Trek: First Contact, one of the first people we sought… was Jerry Goldsmith. Obviously he was a part of Star Trek lore.” -from the extensive liner notes by Jeff Bond and John Takis
