Description
Paul experimented with two different approaches to jazz. Illustrated in Solemn Meditation, 0 Plus One and I Remember Harlem is the compositional approach, where prime emphasis is placed on the significance of the composition rather than the familiarity and comfort of the blowing changes. The other, and most provocative, approach is stressed in Birk’s Works, Persian Village and, to a lesser degree, in Drum Two. Here Paul explores the possibilities of improvising harmonically as well as melodically. These are tunes based on simple forms and unelaborate chord changes and were chosen because they provided a solid foundation on which to build.
