When the popular Borg villains returned for the show\u2019s first ever season-ending cliffhanger \u2013 cutting to a blue-on-black \u201cTo Be Continued\u2026\u201d card after Commander Riker orders \u201cFire\u201d upon the Borg ship \u2013 there truly was a sense that this was \u201cWhere no one has gone before.\u201d With Captain Picard captured and \u201cBorgified\u201d into a villain (and rumors that Patrick Stewart\u2019s contract status was uncertain) fans were left in a state of glorious suspense as to what changes might rock the franchise during the season to come.<\/p>\n

\u201cPart I\u201d was so drastic that \u201cPart II\u201d had a tough act to follow \u2013 but it resolved the storyline with a clever sci-fi twist and excellent special effects and production values. Season-ending cliffhangers would become de rigeur for The Next Generation<\/em> \u2013 as well as most seasons of its spin-off programs \u2013 and the Borg storyline would continue through movies (Star Trek: First Contact<\/em>), television episodes, video games and the franchise\u2019s expanded universe (comic books, novels, fan fiction and more).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
