JOHNNY HART SAYS:
I think the reason I love jazz so much is that it is based on humor.
The best jazz musicians in the world are those who have fun with music.
That is what jazz is all about.
Before I was a Freshmen fan, I was a Kenton fan. Needless to say, the Kenton sound is a totally unique experience for those of us who have ears, and being a Kenton fan, I thought I had heard all there was to offer in the jazz idiom. That is until one fateful day back in 1952 when my wife, Bobby, and I were rendered aghast by the strains of It’s a Blue World wafting through our little plastic radio.
“Who in the world are those?” I said to the gal at the radio station.
“They are the Four Freshmen,” she said, hanging up.
“Don’t give me that stuff,” I said to the dial tone. “There’s got to be at least 12 of them.”
Indeed, there are only four of them, and it is to our benefit that they saw fit to get together and produce the marvelous voicing which you are about to hear.
They are BILL COMSTOCK, ROSS BARBOUR, KEN ALBERS and BOB FLANIGAN.
There is something about the Four Freshmen that is beautifully refreshing. They have never been part of a fad or trend. They are simply a pure blend of pure sound, which even reaches today’s children without the “gimmickry” that is normally required.
Treat yourself, if you will, to an assemblage of talent which will make your next moments the rarest of all. Listen with me to the Orchestra of Stan Kenton, and to the unbelievable sound of 12 guys called The Four Freshmen.
From the moment the stylus hits the record it’s one long groove.
