The band featured here provided the nucleus that would spearhead the new directions in modern music. Notably, James Moody on tenor saxophone, Ernie Henry on alto and Cecil Payne on baritone. Chano Pozo, the gentleman from Cuba who could speak no English, has become a legend.
He was killed shortly after this concert and this is undoubtedly his last recorded performance. He was the unrivaled master of the conga and bongo drums and his contribution to the band represented the first perfect wedding of the advanced harmonic approach with the torrid, exotic drive of the “Afro Cubano” rhythm, a combination that has since been widely used. Both his drumming and his personality served as a magical catalyst for the entire band.
