STAR TREK: GENERATIONS opened to strong box office and enthusiastic reviews, paving the way for three additional feature films with the NEXT GENERATION cast… Implicit in the concept of “generations” is the fact that each comes to an end – people die and pass into memory – or, if they have led particularly meaningful lives, legend. GENERATIONS offered a celebratory teaming of Captains Kirk and Picard, but the film is by and large a story of aging, loss and regret, with Picard shaken by an offscreen family tragedy, and the STAR TREK characters – an audience – enduring the destruction of the Enterprise-D and death of Captain Kirk. But as one generation ends, another begins, and the STAR TREK mission forges ahead with a quintessentially life-affirming finale. [The Movie’s] atypical (for STAR TREK) mood of melancholy, contemplation and – ultimately – uplift was captured by the composer who has scored more hours of the modern-day STAR TREK television series than any other, Dennis McCarthy. -from the extensive liner notes by Jeff Bond and Lukas Kendall
